My narrative artwork is about experience - lived, dreamed or imagined. What I privately conjure up as I make my way through each day and night. My process grows out of drawing and it’s immediacy. I work primarily with gouache, collage and printmaking, enjoying the opaque richness of gouache and the pattern and texture of collage papers that I reuse in many pieces, so that the decorative fragments become part of my visual language. The storytelling and movement in my work on paper come out of dancing. Drawing light on top of dark, a blue field of color with white line work comes from the inside-out feeling of printmaking. Color, layering, ornament, and forms from nature are also important elements in my work. In addition to making my own work I teach art classes at my studio in West Harlem in NYC. My space is bright, comfortable, and only nontoxic materials are used there. Classes for children, adults and families take place throughout the year. Before I began teaching independently I had many years of teaching experience primarily in New York City public schools and museums. Over time teaching has become an important part of my creative process. I live in NYC with my husband and son, and our 2 cats.
